The round of 16 concluded on Thursday at the Terra Wortmann Open, the four remaining matches bringing more quality grass-court tennis even without a major upset. Top seed Alexander Zverev continued the momentum of his Roland Garros title, getting past fellow German Yannick Hanfmann in a home derby to reach the quarterfinals. Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton also advanced, setting up a rematch of Sunday's Stuttgart final between two of the form players of the grass season. In the day's most intriguing match, qualifier Raphael Collignon came from behind to beat fellow qualifier Mattia Bellucci, ending the Italian's run after his headline win over defending champion Alexander Bublik. Friday brings all four quarterfinals as the race for the Halle title reaches its decisive stage.

Fritz rolls past Marozsan in 66 minutes

Taylor Fritz continued his progress on grass, beating Fabian Marozsan 6-2 6-4 in just 66 minutes to reach the quarterfinals. The fifth seed has looked increasingly comfortable on the surface since the start of the swing in Stuttgart, and this was another step up. He was dominant behind serve, firing 16 aces and winning 94% of points behind his first delivery, while also growing more effective in longer rallies. The American converted four break points and won 77% of return points behind the Marozsan second serve, never letting the Hungarian settle. After falling just short of the title in Stuttgart, Fritz is among the most convincing players left in the draw.

Shelton fights back from a set down against Quinn

Ben Shelton came through an all-American battle with Ethan Quinn, beating the world No. 66 in three sets to reach the quarterfinals. The match swung repeatedly, looking settled before turning again. Shelton was more composed and disciplined than in his opening win over Lorenzo Sonego, taking a late break at 5-4 for the first set. The second followed the same script until 5-5, when Shelton failed to convert four break points. Quinn took his chance, breaking to steal the set and force a decider, then moved 2-0 ahead in the third. From there Shelton responded with more aggression and experience, reeling off the comeback to close it out 6-4. As in Stuttgart, his path was far from clean, with moments of disorder and lapses in focus, but he again found solutions on grass with the match in the balance.

Zverev sees off Hanfmann in a home derby

Alexander Zverev continued his strong start to the grass season with a composed win over fellow German Yannick Hanfmann, reaching the quarterfinals with the kind of efficient performance that has marked his game since the Roland Garros title. The top seed needed just one break of serve and a single mini-break in the second-set tiebreak, rarely letting the match drift from his control. He won 93% of points behind his first delivery and fired nine aces, in a win that also carried him past Rafael Nadal for the most ATP 500 match wins, reaching 122. Hanfmann leaves Halle with positives: after his upset of Joao Fonseca in the opening round, the world No. 59 held a high level against one of the best players in the world and pushed the second set to a tiebreak before falling short.

Collignon comes back to end Bellucci's run

Raphael Collignon won the battle of the qualifiers, coming from a set down to beat Mattia Bellucci and continue his run in Halle. The Italian was in control early, with the same aggressive, powerful tennis that had carried him past defending champion Alexander Bublik. Even as his intensity dipped in the second set, little suggested the shift that followed: serving at 4-5, Bellucci had a costly lapse that handed Collignon the set, then conceded an early break in the decider that proved decisive. The Belgian stayed composed throughout, keeping clean ball-striking and disciplined patterns from start to finish. As Bellucci's level fluctuated, Collignon held steady and took his chance, earning one of the biggest wins of his career to reach the quarterfinals of an ATP 500.

Friday's quarterfinals: Fritz and Shelton meet again

Friday's headline is the all-American quarterfinal between Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton, a rematch of last week's Stuttgart final, which Shelton won. Fritz has shown the greater consistency across the grass swing, serving at a high level and looking comfortable in longer rallies; Shelton's route in Stuttgart was built on near-perfect execution and protecting his serve through the tight moments. On a surface where margins are thin, the meeting is a close one.

Elsewhere, wild card Daniel Altmaier looks to continue his run after the upset of Hubert Hurkacz, one of the performances of the tournament, against fourth seed Daniil Medvedev, who has looked increasingly focused since the start of the grass season. Felix Auger-Aliassime meets Frances Tiafoe in a matchup closer than rankings suggest: the Canadian has survived tough tests against Nuno Borges and Learner Tien with stretches of strong tennis and plenty of errors, while Tiafoe arrives off wins over Flavio Cobolli and Sho Shimabukuro. The last quarterfinal pairs top seed Alexander Zverev, the home favourite and Roland Garros champion, with Collignon, through from qualifying and into the last eight on the back of a strong week.
