Top seed Victoria Mboko powered past compatriot Leylah Fernandez to reach her first ever clay court semifinal, while Ann Li continued her steady climb by defeating Marie Bouzkova to achieve a career-high ranking of 27th. Jaqueline Cristian also advanced, ending Daria Kasatkina's winning streak in three sets. Emma Navarro pulled off the comeback of the day in Strasbourg, as Shuai Zhang was serving for the match in her fairytale lucky loser run. Friday's semifinals pit Mboko against Cristian and Navarro against Li in an all-American encounter.
Canadian clash delivers for top seed
Victoria Mboko proved too strong for compatriot Leylah Fernandez, winning 6-4, 6-4 to reach the Strasbourg semifinals. The world No. 9 stormed out to an early advantage, winning five consecutive games after Fernandez held serve in the opener. Mboko's backhand was particularly devastating in the early stages, with winners down the line and cross-court repeatedly overwhelming her opponent. The power differential was stark initially, as Fernandez struggled to find answers to Mboko's aggressive baseline approach. However, the seventh seed showed her fighting spirit, making the match more competitive as it progressed. Mboko's pressure-point statistics told the story of her dominance - she won 5 of just 10 serve pressure points while capitalizing on 13 of 28 return pressure opportunities - many more produced than faced during own serve. The victory improves Mboko to an impressive 15-1 against players outside the top 20 this season and sets up a semifinal against Jaqueline Cristian. Fernandez's loss marks her third quarterfinal exit during the 2026 clay-court swing, however it's a good foundation after difficult start of the season marked with 6-11 record on hard courts. Mboko faces Jaqueline Cristian in semifinals. The Romanian defeated Daria Kasatkina by 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-2 to get into first semifinal since October 2025 during Asian hard courts swing.
Navarro's stunning recovery
Emma Navarro produced the comeback of the day, overturning a set deficit and match point down to defeat Shuai Zhang 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-2. After dropping the opener convincingly, Navarro found herself trailing 5-4 in the second set with Zhang serving for the match. The American broke back at the crucial moment and dominated the subsequent tiebreak to force a decider. In the final set, Navarro was relentless, breaking Zhang three times to seal her progression. Navarro produced much threat than her opponent in the open battle - 48 pressure points to 39 faced. It's her second consecutive three-setter won after defeating Iva Jovic yesterday and first streak of three matches won in a row since Beijing at the end of September 2025. Navarro is one match away from a comeback to top 30, already being up by 8 spots this week to 31st in live rankings.
Li achieves career's highest rank
Ann Li reached her first semifinal since capturing the Merida title last season, defeating Marie Bouzkova 6-3, 7-5 in another Strasbourg quarterfinal. The world No. 30 overcame early serving struggles to outclass the Czech player in crucial moments. Despite winning just 59% of first-serve points, Li's clutch play under pressure proved decisive. Bouzkova, ranked 27th, couldn't match Li's intensity in the key moments despite staying competitive throughout both sets. The victory represents a significant breakthrough for Li, who has been building form steadily on the clay courts ahead of Roland Garros. She proves to be a competent competitor against top opposition - the win against Bouzkova is her another top 30 victory after defeating Swiatek (who retired mid-match due to illness) in Rome and Alexandrova her in Strasbourg. That gets awarded with advance to career's highest place in the rankings - 27th as the things stand for Thursday's evening.
Semifinals preview
All the four semifinalists live the late rewards for their effort put in the clay season, which almost comes to the end in the most important part of it with the pinnacle in form of Roland Garros waiting on the horizon. Each of those who advanced into Friday semis made it for the first time on that surface in 2026. For Victoria Mboko is even bigger breakthrough, as the youngster proves her clay courts credentials with her first ever semifinal apperance on that surface with just 8 WTA level main draw matches played in her career. Mboko faces Jaqueline Cristian for the first time, while Emma Navarro and Ann Li sets up the all-American clash after their sole professional meeting happened many years ago in 2019 ITF circuit, won by Navarro on clay in straight sets. From statistical perspective, Mboko relies on serve very much on clay against more all-rounder profile of her Romanian opponent. Emma Navarro struggles with serve consistency despite a good glimpses of form showed here in Strasbourg, winning just 53% of service games on clay in the ranking period. Navarro versus Li looks like a clash of styles, as the former top 10 player is more efficient and aggresive on return than her opponent.
