Shuai Zhang saved five match points in a scarcely believable escape against Cristina Bucsa to make the most of her lucky loser spot in the WTA 500 Strasbourg draw, while Diane Parry continued her impressive run with a straight-sets win over a rusty Emma Raducanu returning after two months away. Second seed Ekaterina Alexandrova became the latest top seed to fall, joining compatriot Samsonova in an early exit as Ann Li rallied from a set and a break down. Leylah Fernandez survived a late scare from Magdalena Frech, top seed Victoria Mboko earned her first clay win of the year, and Daria Kasatkina extended her winning streak to five. Wednesday's round of 16 brings Emma Navarro against rising third seed Iva Jovic in the day's headline match.
Zhang saves five match points in stunning escape against Bucsa
Shuai Zhang produced one of the most improbable comebacks of the season, saving five match points to defeat Cristina Bucsa 2-6, 7-6(9), 7-5 in a match that defied all logic. The lucky loser, who replaced the withdrawn Madison Keys, looked finished after dropping the opener 6-2 and appeared on borrowed time throughout the second set. Bucsa served for the match at 5-3 and was broken to love. She held match point on Zhang's serve at 4-5, then again at 5-6, and then had a hefty lead in tiebreak being up 6-3 - yet the Chinese veteran somehow clawed her way back to take it 11-9. The momentum shift was total in the decider. Zhang broke twice and converted seven of ten break point chances to complete the escape. Her serve was under siege all afternoon - she faced 52 pressure points on delivery, more than most players encounter in a three-setter - but found a way through each crisis. The 36-year-old extends her perfect 4-0 head-to-head record over Bucsa and climbs to 64th in the live rankings.
Parry sees off rusty Raducanu on home soil
Diane Parry extended her winning streak to six matches with a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over Emma Raducanu, who was returning to competition for the first time since Indian Wells over two months ago. The French wildcard, playing with her left thigh heavily bandaged, showed no signs of discomfort as she controlled the match's trajectory despite Raducanu building 4-2 leads in both sets. The former US Open champion could not sustain her level in either - Parry broke back each time and was the steadier player when it mattered. Raducanu did not give up though. Parry needed 10 breakpoints to gain breaks over the Brit in 9th and 11th game, but despite hard fought advantage, failed to serve for a match twice. The stats reflected the decent level of this match on paper: Parry struck 33 winners against 21 unforced errors, against Raducanu's 28-23. Parry was effective in pressure situations, winning 14 of 25 serve pressure points and 20 of 40 on return. Fresh off her WTA 125 title in Paris, the world No. 94 looks a dangerous floater heading into Roland Garros. For Raducanu, it was always going to be a rust-shaking exercise - but the lack of any clay preparation before the French Open is a concern.
Li rallies past second seed Alexandrova
Ann Li came from a set and a break down to defeat second seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16. After falling behind early, Li steadily took control as Alexandrova's confidence visibly drained. The turning point came in the second set as Li began to dominate return exchanges, winning 16 of 29 return pressure points while staying solid on her own serve with 24 of 31. Ten aces from the American further underlined her aggressive approach once she found her range. Alexandrova's season continues to unravel - she drops to 6-12 for the year, with three of those wins coming from a single tournament in Abu Dhabi. The second seed's struggles mirror those of compatriot Samsonova, who fell in the first round, as both former top-20 mainstays face an uncertain summer of ranking freefall. Alexandrova won just match on clay this year - against Gabriela Knuston ranked 224th in first round of Stuttgart. Li, now 12-12 for the year, faces a more promising trajectory with her forehand doing consistent damage on the clay.
Fernandez edges Frech in three-set battle
Leylah Fernandez needed all her resilience to outlast Magdalena Frech 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in a match that swung wildly in both directions. The seventh seed broke early in the opener but Frech responded with four straight games to lead 4-2 - only for Fernandez to reel off four consecutive games of her own to steal the set. The pattern reversed in the second as Frech built a 3-1 lead and held firm despite Fernandez's persistent use of drop shots, leveling the match with growing confidence.
The decider looked settled when Fernandez surged to a 5-1 lead, but Frech launched a remarkable fightback, stringing together four games to close within 4-5 and bring the crowd to life. Just as a full comeback seemed possible, Fernandez steadied herself and closed it out. The seventh seed committed nine double faults across the match but her return game proved the difference - she converted five of 11 break point chances and won 22 of 34 serve pressure points despite trailing in multiple service games. For Frech, who had ended a six-match losing streak with her first-round win over Talia Gibson, the competitive showing against a Madrid and Stuttgart quarterfinalist offers encouragement heading into Roland Garros.
Mboko books first clay courts win on clay
The Canadian top seed of the tournament was yet to score a victory on clay after a sole appearance in Madrid which ended up on first round. Victoria Mboko has kicked-off her Strasbourg campaign with a commanding victory in hit clash against Lois Boisson which ended the Tuesday's action in Court Patrice Dominguez. The French semifinalist of last year's Roland Garros has just earned her first victory on tour in the opening round after an injury-tormented start of the season. Both the players looked really sharp on serve in first set, where the middle part occured to be decisive with three breaks betwen third and fifth game. Mboko took it by 6-4 and apart from one service game lost at start of second set, she was the one who stayed with her good level of consistency and intensity in rallies till the end of the match. The Canadian was taking care of her second serve, winning 10 out of 15 points there and produced much more danger than Boisson who needed to defend 10 breakpoints and saved just half of those. Leylah Fernandez will be Mboko's opponent in an exciting all-Canadian clash in Thursday's quarterfinals.
Kasatkina rolls past Stearns to reach quarterfinals
Daria Kasatkina continues her good run on clay, sweeping past Peyton Stearns 6-1, 6-3 in the most one-sided match of the day. The former world No. 8 was in complete control, winning 11 of 15 serve pressure points while applying relentless pressure on return with 11 of 17. She broke Stearns five times and saved four of five break points on her own serve, never allowing the American to establish any foothold. After upsetting last year's finalist Samsonova in the first round, Kasatkina now looks like in best shape since multiple months. The Australian citizen has recently won the WTA 15 title in La Bisbal D'Emporda two weeks ago which started her somewhat bounce back after difficult start of the season on hard courts.
Wednesday preview
The line-up of quarterfinals will be fully emerged after last four round of 16 matches to be played tomorrow. The all-American clash between Emma Navarro and Iva Jovic is the biggest highlight of Wednesday's schedule. The former top 10 player tries to come back to good form after series of disappointing results (6-11 this season) and health issues. Jovic is on the other pole, still rising after breakthrough in tour last year. The youngster is third seed and proves to be a competent clay courter after her run to semifinal in Charleston or putting up a close fight against Coco Gauff in Rome.
I. Jovic (3) vs. E. Navarro match preview
Fourth seed Clara Tauson does also need some confidendce and match practice back after problems which caused her retiring from last two matches - the only played in last two months. Her opponent Jaqueline Cristian has stormed against Mccartney Kessler in first round, giving away just two games to the American.
C. Tauson (4) vs. J. Cristian match preview
Two players who delivered much of entertainment today, play against each other tomorrow as Shuai Zhang faces Diane Parry. Eight seed Marie Bouzkova meets with Oleksandra Oliynykova who delivered a comeback against Alexandra Eala in Monday's three hours-long battle.
