Thursday's schedule at the BOSS Open could not be completed as rain brought a premature end to play in Stuttgart. The all-American clash between Ben Shelton and Marcos Giron was suspended with Giron leading 7-6(7) 4-4, leaving one remaining round-of-16 match to be finished on Friday. While the weather disrupted the schedule, most of the top contenders successfully advanced to the quarterfinals. Defending champion Taylor Fritz survived a tough test from Martin Landaluce, Frances Tiafoe continued his solid start to the grass-court season, and fourth seed Jiri Lehecka battled back from a set down to defeat James Duckworth. The day's biggest surprise came in the final completed match, where Sho Shimabukuro ended Nick Kyrgios' run to reach the first ATP quarterfinal of his career. As a result, Friday's order of play will feature the conclusion of Shelton-Giron alongside three quarterfinal matches.

Fritz survives Landaluce in two tiebreaks

Taylor Fritz survived a stern test from Martin Landaluce to book his place in the Stuttgart quarterfinals. The defending champion was pushed all the way by the 19-year-old Spaniard, eventually prevailing in three sets after two tiebreaks. Landaluce, who enjoyed a breakthrough clay-court swing this spring, continued his strong form on grass by taking the opening set and forcing Fritz into a deciding-set tiebreak. The American relied heavily on his serve, firing 25 aces and winning 82% of points behind his first delivery. After his disappointing Roland Garros campaign, where he fell in the opening round to Nishesh Basavareddy, Fritz will hope a return to grass and a venue where he lifted the trophy last year can spark a turnaround in form.

Shimabukuro ends Kyrgios resurgence to reach first ATP quarterfinal

The biggest upset of the day came courtesy of Sho Shimabukuro, who edged Nick Kyrgios in a dramatic three-set battle to reach his first ATP quarterfinal. After his impressive opening-round win over Corentin Moutet, Kyrgios appeared to have put many of the doubts surrounding his comeback to rest, but the Australian's run ended at the hands of the world No. 103. The Stuttgart crowd was treated to nearly two hours of entertaining grass-court tennis, featuring attacking play, net exchanges and even an underarm serve from Kyrgios on set point. The Australian came within two points of victory in the second-set tiebreak before Shimabukuro forced a decider, eventually securing the lone break of the match at 4-4 in the third set. Despite the defeat, Kyrgios delivered another encouraging performance, firing 22 aces and winning 79% of points behind his first serve. For Shimabukuro, the victory moves him within touching distance of a maiden Top 100 debut.

Tiafoe sees off Hijikata in straight sets

Frances Tiafoe followed up his hard-fought opening-round win over Daniel Altmaier with a more straightforward performance against Rinky Hijikata, advancing 6-4 6-4 in one hour and 20 minutes. The sixth seed was rarely at his best statistically, landing just 59% of first serves and committing four double faults, but consistently produced when it mattered most. Hijikata kept himself within striking distance throughout the second set, yet Tiafoe's superior shot-making proved decisive in the key moments. The American converted four of his ten break-point opportunities and won 45% of return points behind the Australian's second serve, securing his place in the last eight without dropping a set.

Lehecka fights back past Duckworth

Jiri Lehecka came from a set down to defeat James Duckworth and continue his strong start to the grass-court season. The fourth seed recovered after dropping the opening set, relying on an excellent serving performance to turn the match around. Lehecka struck 16 aces, won 84% of points behind his first serve and an impressive 71% behind his second, saving both break points he faced throughout the contest. With neither player creating many opportunities on return, the Czech made the difference through his consistency on serve, finishing with 116 total points won compared to Duckworth's 103 and securing his place in the Stuttgart quarterfinals.

Friday preview

Three quarterfinal matches are scheduled for Friday, alongside the completion of the suspended clash between Ben Shelton and Marcos Giron. On paper, the most evenly matched contest features fourth seed Jiri Lehecka and sixth seed Frances Tiafoe, the only quarterfinal between two seeded players still standing in the draw. Both have looked comfortable on grass so far and arrive with realistic ambitions of making a deep run this week.

Third seed Alexander Bublik will take on Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a matchup that should produce plenty of fireworks on serve. The Kazakh enters as the favorite given both his ranking and proven grass-court pedigree, but matches involving Bublik rarely follow a predictable script, especially against one of the biggest servers on tour.

Defending champion Taylor Fritz faces Mattia Bellucci in his bid to keep the title defense alive. The American will understandably be favored, yet Bellucci has already survived two three-set battles this week and has shown the fighting spirit required to trouble opponents on this surface. With Fritz still looking to fully rediscover his best level after a disappointing clay season, the Italian may sense an opportunity.

Meanwhile, Sho Shimabukuro awaits the winner of Shelton-Giron. Whichever American emerges from the suspended encounter will be expected to advance, but the Japanese qualifier has already produced the biggest upset of the tournament and arrives at the best ATP-level week of his career with nothing to lose.
