The 2026 BMW Open returns to Munich with one of its strongest fields in recent years, as world No. 3 Alexander Zverev headlines an ATP 500 event featuring two top-10 players and five from the top 20. The German star brings impressive clay court credentials to his home event, having posted an 18-6 record (75%) on the surface over the past 12 months, including the title won in Munich last year, being a title defender in this edition. American Ben Shelton enters as the second seed, while Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik rounds out a compelling top three that promises fireworks on the Bavarian clay.
Top half: Zverev defends title on home soil
Alexander Zverev opens his campaign against Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic in what should be a manageable first-round encounter for the top seed. The German's clay court form has been exceptional, winning 18 of 24 matches while averaging 4.8 aces per match and saving 56.2% of break points faced. His projected quarterfinal opponent, Francisco Cerundolo, faces a stern opening test against German wildcard Jan Lennard Struff, who will have strong home support but struggles with his return game on clay. Cerundolo has great clay courts credentials with 21-11 record in rolling year, including his title in ATP 250 Buenos Aires in February and once navigating through first rounds, will be very tough opponent for Zverev in quarters.
The second quarter of this half features Flavio Cobolli taking on Hungary's Marton Fucsovics in the first round. The Italian has compiled an 11-6 clay court record this season and can clash with compatriot Luciano Darderi, his potential quarterfinal opponent. Darderi, who owns an impressive 23-9 clay court record over the past year, opens against China's Zhizhen Zhang. Both the Italians were great clay court performers in 2025 which helped them to lift up into elite of ATP field, but they started the current clay campaign slowly with early exits in Monte Carlo Masters.
The statistical analysis reveals interesting contrasts within this section. Alexander Zverev dominates in service games won percentage and overall match control, while Francisco Cerundolo excels in return games won and match efficiency. Luciano Darderi shows strong first-serve effectiveness.

If seeds hold, Zverev would face Cobolli in the semifinals, a matchup where the German holds a 2-0 career advantage, including a straight-sets victory at Halle last year.
Bottom half open wide for contenders
Ben Shelton receives favorable positioning as the second seed, facing a qualifier in his opening round. The American's 8-6 clay court record may appear modest, but his 90.0% tiebreak success rate and 7.6 aces per match suggest he can impose his power game effectively on the surface. which is far from perfect conditions to shine for the American.
Alexander Bublik brings excellent clay court form to Munich, matching Zverev's 18-6 record while leading the field with 9.0 aces per match. Bublik started his march to top 10 of ATP Rankings during summer clay swing, winning back to back titles in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel, just after run to quarterfinals of Roland Garros. His head-to-head advantage over Zverev (3-1) adds intrigue to a potential final meeting. The Kazakhstani's opening match against Hurkacz, who recently defeated Darderi in Monte Carlo, represents an immediate test of his title credentials.
France's Arthur Rinderknech takes the seventh seed into a first-round encounter with American Alex Michelsen, while eighth-seeded Tallon Griekspoor faces Canada's Denis Shapovalov. Rinderknech's clay court struggles (6-8 record) contrast sharply with his strong record against top-20 opponents, creating an intriguing wildcard factor.
There are two intriguing first round clashes there, as Joao Fonseca meets Alejandro Tabilo and Stefanos Tsitsipas faces Fabian Marozsan.
This half presents a fascinating statistical landscape. Alexander Bublik leads in match efficiency and ace production, while Alejandro Tabilo excels in return games won percentage. Ben Shelton is not a favorite of this half despite being a top seed there and lack of the dominant force there promises a wide open battle for the places in decisive stages of the tournament.
