Marta Kostyuk upsets Elena Rybakina in today's R16 match of Adelaide 1 tournament. Reigning Wimbledon champion, who was considered as a conteder to make a really deep run in Adelaide after eliminating Danielle Collins in a really crazy kind of match-up for the first round of any regular tournament, did not capitalized on her valuable win against superb player from Florida and crashed out of the draw two days later. Rybakina was expected to win today's match as well. The first games of the match were looking similar to the monday's clash with Collins. Both players were serving well, holding their serves easily, but it was Kazakh player who created first opportunities to break her opponent. She was even close to break for a set, but tie-break was needed to decide the fates. Rybakina managed to prevail , but it was end of her good time for today. From the start od 2nd set, Ukrainian started to take the initiative. She was striking with confidence, and working really hard and effective on defence. Playing well deep from the baseline and making a huge energic and running effort, the 20 y/o player showed piece of great all-round tennis, leaving Rybakina in a lost field without finding any solution. 6-7 6-2 6-3 was the final score with a huge statement win for Kostyuk, who booked her place in QF, starting her campaign from the qualies in the New Year's Eve. Impressive 4 wins in a row run can be continued on Friday, when Kostyuk meets the winner of tomorrow's match between Ons Jabeur and Sorana Cirstea.
Quite a weird scenario was brought by the match of top 10 player Veronika Kudermetova and Bianca Andreescu. The Canadian started superbly with quick two breaks and lead 4-0. Starting from there, she won... 0 games till the end of the match. Kudermetova performed a powerful comeback to the set, making up all the gap at first, and the running away with the score, giving Andreescu absolutely no chance to exist till the end of a match.
In two other WTA matches for today, Aryna Sabalenka managed to beat Liudmila Samsonova in two tiebreaks. The Belarusian was 1-5 down in the first set, but prevailed to come-back and win a tight tiebreak game 10-8. Second set was also decided in the 13th game, and it also went on Sabalenka's way. She will face Marketa Vondrousova in QF. Czech who comes back from last year's long break with quite a style, defeated Kaia Kanepi 6-0 6-4.
Daniil Medvedev continues his run in ATP 250 tournament in Adelaide after convincing win against Miomir Kecmanovic. This match was much easier the previous one for Medvedev, who fought a fierce battle with Lorenzo Sonego in R1 until his opponent needed to retire. This time it was one way traffic with easy 6-0 6-3 win. The next hurdle will be a meeting with fellow countryman Karen Khachanov who defeated Jack Draper in straight sets.
